Context of Mark 5:11
9And he asked him, What is thy name? And he says to him, Legion is my name, because we are many. 10And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there just at the mountain a great herd of swine feeding; 12and they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine that we may enter into them. 13And Jesus [immediately] allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea.

There often appears to be a great increase of strength produced by insanity, and what is here stated in regard to this maniac often occurs in Palestine and elsewhere now. Dr. Thomson…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-13The spirits kept begging Jesus, which shows his authority over them. Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs. The pigs show that this was Gentile (non-Jewish) territory. Some people focus on the loss of the pigs or ask why Jesus allowed the demons to destroy them. But Mark and his audience focused on how Jesus saved the man.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1111. Now there was there, nigh unto the mountains--rather, "to the mountain," according to what is clearly the true reading.
