47Then the Pharisees responded to them, “Are you fooled too? 48Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, which doesn’t know the law, is accursed.” 50Nicodemus — the one who came to him previously and who was one of them — said to them, 51“Our law doesn’t judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he’s doing, does it?”

Wagenseil and Schoettgen have given many proofs of the contempt in which the common people were held by the Pharisees. Those who were disciples of any of the rabbins were considered as being in a much better state…Read the comment

Alas, that many, who are for a time restrained, and who speak highly of the word of Jesus, speedily lose their convictions, and go on in their sins! People are foolishly swayed by outward motives in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 49-51Nicodemus was likely starting to believe in Jesus (see 3:1–21; 19:38–42). Some leaders claimed that none of the Pharisees believed in Jesus (7:48). They spoke as if only the crowd, whom the leaders believed did not understand the law, supported him. However, Nicodemus shows that this was not completely true. Not only the people in the crowd, but also some Pharisees were beginning to believe in him.Read the comment
