Context of John 7:49
47The Pharisees replied, ‘He seems to have made you believe his lies! 48None of the Pharisees or our leaders believe in him. But this crowd does not know what God's Law teaches. God will surely punish them.’ 50Nicodemus spoke to them. He himself was one of the Pharisees. He was the man who had gone to speak with Jesus before. He said, 51‘We must find out first what this man has done. Then we can decide if it is right to punish him. Our law says that we must listen to him first.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 49This people - ̔ , This rabble. The common people were treated by the Pharisees with the most sovereign contempt: they were termed הארץ עם am ha -arets, people of the earth; and were not thought worthy to have a resurrection to eternal life. Wagenseil and Schoettgen have given many proofs of the contempt in which the common people were held by the Pharisees. Those who were disciples of any of the rabbins were considered as being in a much better state…Read the comment

Alas, that many, who are for a time restrained, and who speak highly of the word of Jesus, speedily lose their convictions, and go on in their sins! People are foolishly swayed by outward motives in…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 49-51Nicodemus was likely starting to believe in Jesus (see 3:1–21; 19:38–42). Some leaders claimed that none of the Pharisees believed in Jesus (7:48). They spoke as if only the crowd, whom the leaders believed did not understand the law, supported him. However, Nicodemus shows that this was not completely true. Not only the people in the crowd, but also some Pharisees were beginning to believe in him.Read the comment
