Context of Hebrews 12:15
13and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead. 14Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness — without it no one will see the Lord. Make sure that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no root of bitterness springs up, causing trouble and defiling many. 16And make sure that there isn’t any immoral or irreverent person like Esau, who sold his birthright in exchange for a single meal. 17For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn’t find any opportunity for repentance.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 15Looking diligently - · Looking about, over, and upon; being constantly on your guard. Lest any man fail of the grace of God - ̔ · Lest any person should come behind, or fall off from, this grace or Gift of God; this state of salvation, viz. the Gospel system or Christianity; for this is most evidently the meaning of the apostle. Those reasons are found in the propensities of our hearts to evil; in the temptations of the world; in the allurements to apostasy presented by the great adversary of our souls.
