Context of Acts 24:19
17After many years, I came to bring charitable gifts and offerings to my people. 18While I was doing this, some Jews from Asia found me ritually purified in the temple, without a crowd and without any uproar. It is they who ought to be here before you to bring charges, if they have anything against me. 20Or let these men here state what wrongdoing they found in me when I stood before the Sanhedrin, 21other than this one statement I shouted while standing among them, ‘Today I am on trial before you concerning the resurrection of the dead.’”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Who ought to have been here - They were the proper witnesses, and as they had staid away it showed that they were not prepared to undergo a strict examination. They alone could testify as to anything that occurred in the temple; and as they were not present, that charge ought to be dismissed.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-21Verses 10-21 Paul gives a just account of himself, which clears him from crime, and likewise shows the true reason of the violence against him. Let us never be driven from any good way by its having an ill name. It is very comfortable, in worshipping God, to look to him as the God of our fathers, and to set up no other rule of faith or practice but the Scriptures. This shows there will be a resurrection to a final judgment. Prophets and their doctrines…Read the comment
