Context of Matthew 24:36

34Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark.

Commentaries on Matthew 24:36

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36But of that day and hour - , here, is translated season by many eminent critics, and is used in this sense by both sacred and profane authors. As the day was not known, in which Jerusalem should be invested by the Romans, therefore our Lord advised his disciples to pray that it might not be on a Sabbath; and as the season was not known, therefore they were to pray that it might not be in the winter; Matthew 24:20. • Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36But of that day and hour - Of the precise time of the fulfillment. The “general signs” of its approach have been given, as the budding of the fig-tree is a certain indication that summer is near; but “the precise time” is not indicated by these things. One part of their inquiry was Matthew 24:3 when those things should be. He now replies to them by saying that the precise time would not be foretold. Compare the notes at Acts 1:7. Knoweth no man, no, not…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-41Verses 29-41 Christ foretells his second coming. It is usual for prophets to speak of things as near and just at hand, to express the greatness and certainty of them. Concerning Christ's second coming, it is foretold that there shall be a great change, in order to the making all things new. Then they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds. At his first coming, he was set for a sign that should be spoken against, but at his second coming, a sign…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36That day is the day of judgment. nor the Son: This phrase shows that Jesus did not know the exact time. Acts 1:7 suggests the same idea. Because no one knows the day, Jesus told his followers to stay watchful and faithful (see Matthew 24:37–25:46). This statement should discourage anyone from trying to calculate the exact date when our Lord will return.Read the comment
