Context of Revelation 9:8
6And in those days people will seek death and will not find it; and they will long to die [to escape the pain], but [will discover that] death evades them. 7The locusts resembled horses prepared and equipped for battle; and on their heads appeared to be [something like] golden crowns, and their faces resembled human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9They had breastplates (scales) like breastplates made of iron; and the [whirring] noise of their wings was like the [thunderous] noise of countless horse-drawn chariots charging [at full speed] into battle. 10They have tails like scorpions, and stingers; and in their tails is their power to hurt people for five months.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8And they had hair as the hair of women - Long hair; not such as men commonly wear, but such as women wear. See the notes on 1 Corinthians 11:14. This struck John as a peculiarity, that, though warriors, they should have the appearance of effeminacy indicated by allowing their hair to grow long. It is clear from this, that John regarded their appearance as unusual and remarkable. Though manifestly designed to represent an army, yet it was not the usual…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-10Some people view these locusts as symbols of attack helicopters, missiles, or other modern weapons. However, they originate from the Abyss, not from human creation. The description of these creatures, based on the appearance of locusts, is intended to cause fear and disgust. Their gold crowns show that their torment affects much of the earth.Read the comment
