Context of Revelation 9:10

8They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9They had breastplates (scales) like breastplates made of iron; and the [whirring] noise of their wings was like the [thunderous] noise of countless horse-drawn chariots charging [at full speed] into battle. They have tails like scorpions, and stingers; and in their tails is their power to hurt people for five months. 11They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss (the bottomless pit); in Hebrew his name is Abaddon (destruction), and in Greek he is called Apollyon (destroyer-king). 12The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

Commentaries on Revelation 9:10

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10They had tails like unto scorpions - This may refer to the consequences of their victories. They infected the conquered with their pernicious doctrines. Their power was to hurt men five months - The locusts make their principal ravages during the five summer months. But probably these may be prophetic months, as above, in Revelation 9:5; - 150 years.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10And they had tails like unto scorpions - The fancy of an Arab now often discerns a resemblance between the tail of the locust and the scorpion. See the remark of Niebuhr, quoted in the notes on Revelation 9:7. And there were stings in their tails - Like the stings of scorpions. See the notes on Revelation 9:3. This made the locusts which appeared to John the more remarkable, for though the fancy may imagine a resemblance between the tail of a locust and a…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-10Some people view these locusts as symbols of attack helicopters, missiles, or other modern weapons. However, they originate from the Abyss, not from human creation. The description of these creatures, based on the appearance of locusts, is intended to cause fear and disgust. Their gold crowns show that their torment affects much of the earth.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. tails like unto scorpions--like unto the tails of scorpions. and there were stings--There is no oldest manuscript for this reading.
