Context of Matthew 26:66
64Jesus said to him, “You have [in fact] said it; but more than that I tell you [regardless of what you do with Me now], in the future you will see [Me revealed as] the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65Then the high priest tore his robes [in mock horror] and exclaimed, “He has blasphemed [by making Himself God’s equal]! What further need have we of witnesses or evidence? See, you have now heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves to be put to death.” 67Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and some slapped Him, 68saying, “Prophesy to us, You Christ (Messiah, Anointed); who was it that struck You?”

Commentaries on Matthew 26:66
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 66He is guilty of death - , he is liable to death. All the forms of justice are here violated. The judge becomes a party and accuser, and proceeds to the verdict without examining whether all the prophecies concerning the Messiah, and the innumerable miracles which he wrought, did not justify him. Examination and proof are the ruin of all calumnies, and of the authors of them, and therefore they take care to keep off from these two things. See Quesnel.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 66What think ye? - What is your opinion? What sentence do you pronounce? As President of the Sanhedrin he demanded their judgment. He is guilty of death - This was the form which was used when a criminal was condemned to die. The meaning is, he is guilty of a crime to which the law annexes death. This sentence was used before the Jews became subject to the Romans, when they had the power of inflicting death. After they were subject to the Romans, though the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 57-68Verses 57-68 Jesus was hurried into Jerusalem. It looks ill, and bodes worse, when those who are willing to be Christ's disciples, are not willing to be known to be so. Here began Peter's denying him: for to follow Christ afar off, is to begin to go back from him. It is more our concern to prepare for the end, whatever it may be, than curiously to ask what the end will be. The event is God's, but the duty is ours. Now the Scriptures were fulfilled, which…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 57-68This hearing was probably an informal meeting to agree on the charges. The Jewish leaders faced pressure to keep the hearing secret to avoid a riot (see Matthew 21:26, 46; 26:5, 55; John 11:45–53).Read the comment
