Context of Mark 14:52

50Then all of His disciples abandoned Him and fled. 51A young man was following Him, wearing [only] a linen sheet over his naked body; and some men seized him. But pulling free of the linen sheet, he escaped [from them] naked. 53They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) gathered together. 54Peter had followed Him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers [guards and servants] and warming himself at the fire.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 52And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked - It has often been intimated, by the inhabitants of India, that a European in strait clothes must be in great danger when his clothes take fire. From their loose clothing they can suddenly disengage themselves. When two Hindoos are engaged in a violent quarrel, and one seizes the clothing of the other, often the latter will leave his clothes in the hands of his opponent, and flee away naked. Mark 14:51 A certain young man - Who this was we have no means of determining, but it seems not improbable that he may have been the owner of the garden, and that he may have had an understanding with Jesus that he should visit it for retirement when he withdrew from the city. That he was not one of the apostles is clear. It…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-52Verses 43-52 Because Christ appeared not as a temporal prince, but preached repentance, reformation, and a holy life, and directed men's thoughts, and affections, and aims to another world, therefore the Jewish rulers sought to destroy him. Peter wounded one of the band. It is easier to fight for Christ than to die for him. But there is a great difference between faulty disciples and hypocrites. The latter rashly and without thought call Christ Master…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 51-52The account of the arrest of Jesus ends with a note about an unnamed young man. There is no clear theological reason given for why Mark includes this detail. One possible explanation is that it is a personal detail from Mark himself, but this cannot be confirmed.Read the comment
