Context of Mark 13:19
17And woe to those women who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18Pray that it will not occur in winter, for at that time there will be such tribulation as has not occurred, from the beginning of the creation which God made, until now—and never will [be again]. 20And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose [for Himself], He shortened the days. 21Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!’ or, ‘Look, He is there!’ do not believe it;

Commentaries on Mark 13:19
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-23Verses 14-23 The Jews in rebelling against the Romans, and in persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within less than forty years after this. Such destruction and desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history. Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19For those will be days of tribulation unseen from the beginning of God’s creation until now: This kind of hyperbole (intentional exaggeration for emphasis) is common in Hebrew and Aramaic patterns of speech. It emphasizes the terror of that time and should not be understood as a precise comparison with every other disaster in history. and never to be seen again: The events of 13:14–23 would not end human history. History continued after the destruction of…Read the comment
