Context of Luke 2:7
5in order to register with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was with child. 6While they were there [in Bethlehem], the time came for her to give birth, and she gave birth to her Son, her firstborn; and she wrapped Him in [swaddling] cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no [private] room for them in the inn. 8In the same region there were shepherds staying out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.

Commentaries on Luke 2:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Laid him in a manger - Wetstein has shown, from a multitude of instances, that means not merely the manger, but the whole stable, and this I think is its proper meaning in this place. The Latins use praesepe, a manger, in the same sense. So Virgil, Aen. vii. p. 275. Stabant ter centum nitidi in praesepibus altis "Three hundred sleek horses stood in lofty stables." Many have thought that this was a full proof of the meanness and poverty of the holy family…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Her first-born son - Whether Mary had any other children or not has been a matter of controversy. The obvious meaning of the Bible is that she had; and if this be the case, the word “firstborn” is here to be taken in its common signification. Swaddling clothes - When a child among the Hebrews was born, it was washed in water, rubbed in salt, and then wrapped in swaddling clothes; that is, not garments regularly made, as with us, but bands or blankets that…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7wrapped Him in swaddling cloths: This was a common way to show motherly love and care (see Ezekiel 16:4). a manger: This was a feeding container for animals. there was no room for them in the inn: The word translated as inn does not refer to a commercial inn (a place where travelers pay to stay). Such inns were likely not found in a small town like Bethlehem. It more likely refers to a guest room in a private home or a simple shelter for travelers. Since…Read the comment

Had she then none to help her? It would seem so (2Co 8:9). a manger--the manger, the bench to which the horses' heads were tied, on which their food could rest [Webster and Wilkinson]. no room in the inn--a square erection, open inside…Read the comment
