Context of Isaiah 7:14
12But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!” 13Then Isaiah said, “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too small a thing for you to try the patience of men, but will you try the patience of my God as well? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Listen carefully, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will call his name Immanuel (God with us). 15He will eat curds and honey when he knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16For before the child will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land (Canaan) whose two kings you dread will be deserted [both Ephraim and Aram].

A sign or proof is desirable in the case, and Yahweh will not withhold it because a proud and contemptuous monarch refuses to seek it. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-16Verses 10-16 Secret disaffection to God is often disguised with the colour of respect to him; and those who are resolved that they will not trust God, yet pretend they will not tempt him. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14This prophecy was fully realized with the birth of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:18–24). It is likely that it also partially came true in Isaiah's time, possibly with the birth of the godly King Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, or one of Isaiah's children. The similar verb sequence in Isaiah 7:14 and 8:3 (be with child … give birth … call) and the connection between Immanuel and Maher-shalal-hash-baz in 8:5–10 suggest they were the same person. The name Immanuel means…Read the comment
