Context of 2 Corinthians 8:9
7But just as you excel in everything, [and lead the way] in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in genuine concern, and in your love for us, see that you excel in this gracious work [of giving] also. 8I am not saying this as a command [to dictate to you], but to prove, by [pointing out] the enthusiasm of others, the sincerity of your love as well. For you are recognizing [more clearly] the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [His astonishing kindness, His generosity, His gracious favor], that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich (abundantly blessed). 10I give you my opinion in this matter: this is to your advantage, who were the first to begin a year ago not only to take action [to help the believers in Jerusalem], but also [the first] to desire to do it. 11So now finish this, so that your eagerness in desiring it may be equaled by your completion of it, according to your ability.

Commentaries on 2 Corinthians 8:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ - This was the strongest argument of all; and it is urged home by the apostle with admirable address. Ye know - Ye are acquainted with God's ineffable love in sending Jesus Christ into the world; and ye know the grace - the infinite benevolence of Christ himself. That, though he was rich - The possessor, as he was the creator, of the heavens and the earth; for your sakes he became poor - he emptied himself…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9For ye know - The apostle Paul was accustomed to illustrate every subject, and to enforce every duty where it could be done, by a reference to the life and sufferings of the Lord Jesus Christ. The design of this verse is apparent. It is, to show the duty of giving liberally to the objects of benevolence, from the fact that the Lord Jesus was willing to become poor in order that he might benefit others. The idea is, that he who was Lord and proprietor of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-9Verses 7-9 Faith is the root; and as without faith it is not possible to please God, He 11:6, so those who abound in faith, will abound in other graces and good works also; and this will work and show itself by love. Great talkers are not always the best doers; but these Corinthians were diligent to do, as well as to know and talk well. To all these good things the apostle desires them to add this grace also, to abound in charity to the poor. The best…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9The Lord himself is the model for generous giving. He was rich in the Father's presence (John 17:5, 24) but became poor by living as a human and dying on the cross (see Philippians 2:6–11). Through this selfless act, he made people rich with the blessings of salvation.Read the comment

If the Lord did so much more, and at so much heavier a cost, for your sakes; much more may you do an act of love to your brethren at so little a sacrifice of…Read the comment
