Context of Luke 1:2
1Since [as is well known] many have undertaken to compile an orderly account of the things which have been fulfilled among us [by God], exactly as they were handed down to us by those [with personal experience] who from the beginning [of Christ’s ministry] were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word [that is, of the teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ], 3it seemed fitting for me as well, [and so I have decided] after having carefully searched out and investigated all the events accurately, from the very beginning, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus; 4so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught [that is, the history and doctrine of the faith].

Commentaries on Luke 1:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eye-witnesses - Probably this alludes to the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, which it is likely were written before St. Luke wrote his, and on the models of which he professes to write his own; and ', from the beginning, must mean, from the time that Christ first began to proclaim the glad tidings of the kingdom; and , eye-witnesses, must necessarily signify, those who had been with him from…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2As they delivered them - As they narrated them. As they gave an account of them. Eye-witnesses - Who had seen those things themselves, and who were therefore proper witnesses. Ministers of the word - The term “word” here means the “gospel.” Luke never uses it, as John does, to denote the second Person of the…Read the comment
