Context of John 7:19
17If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know whether the teaching is of God or whether I speak on My own accord and by My own authority. 18He who speaks on his own accord seeks glory and honor for himself. But He who seeks the glory and the honor of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness or deception in Him. “Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law. Why do you want to kill Me [for not keeping it]?” 20The crowd answered, “You have a demon [You are out of Your mind]! Who wants to kill You?” 21Jesus replied, “I did one work, and you are all astounded.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19Did not Moses give you the law, etc. - The scribes and Pharisees announced our Lord to the multitude as a deceiver; and they grounded their calumny on this, that he was not an exact observer of the law, for he had healed a man on the Sabbath day, John 5:9, John 5:10; and consequently must be a false prophet. Now they insinuated, that the interests of religion required him to be put to death: As a violator of the law; and, as a false prophet and deceiver…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Did not Moses give you the law? - This they admitted, and on this they prided themselves. Every violation of that law they considered as deserving of death. They had accused Jesus of violating it because he had healed a man on the Sabbath, and for that they had sought his life, John 5:10-16. He here recalls that charge to their recollection, and shows them that, though they pretended great reverence for that law, yet they were really its violators in…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-24Verses 14-24 Every faithful minister may humbly adopt Christ's words. And amidst the disputes which disturb the world, if any man, of any nation, seeks to do the will of God, he shall know whether the doctrine is of God, or whether men speak of themselves. Only those who hate the truth shall be given up to errors which will be fatal. Surely it was as…Read the comment

However, Jesus pointed out a serious problem. While they honored the law in words, they were planning to kill him. In doing so, they were breaking the law (Exodus 20:13).Read the comment
