Context of John 7:19

17If any man will do his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from myself. 18He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? 20The people answered and said, Thou hast a demon: who goeth about to kill thee? 21Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

Commentaries on John 7:19

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19Did not Moses give you the law, etc. - The scribes and Pharisees announced our Lord to the multitude as a deceiver; and they grounded their calumny on this, that he was not an exact observer of the law, for he had healed a man on the Sabbath day, John 5:9, John 5:10; and consequently must be a false prophet. Now they insinuated, that the interests of religion required him to be put to death: As a violator of the law; and, as a false prophet and deceiver…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 19Did not Moses give you the law? - This they admitted, and on this they prided themselves. Every violation of that law they considered as deserving of death. They had accused Jesus of violating it because he had healed a man on the Sabbath, and for that they had sought his life, John 5:10-16. He here recalls that charge to their recollection, and shows them that, though they pretended great reverence for that law, yet they were really its violators in…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-24Verses 14-24 Every faithful minister may humbly adopt Christ's words. His doctrine is not his own finding out, but is from God's word, through the teaching of his Spirit. And amidst the disputes which disturb the world, if any man, of any nation, seeks to do the will of God, he shall know whether the doctrine is of God, or whether men speak of themselves. Only those who hate the truth shall be given up to errors which will be fatal. Surely it was as…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps it: The Jewish leaders were proud of the law of Moses. They believed they carefully obeyed it. However, Jesus pointed out a serious problem. While they honored the law in words, they were planning to kill him. In doing so, they were breaking the law (Exodus 20:13).Read the comment
