Context of John 5:45
43I have come in My Father’s name and with His power, and you do not receive Me [because your minds are closed]; but if another comes in his own name and with no authority or power except his own, you will receive him and give your approval to an imposter. 44How can you believe [in Me], when you [seek and] receive glory and approval from one another, and yet you do not seek the glory and approval which comes from the one and only God? Do not think that I [am the One who] will accuse you before the Father. There [already] is one who accuses you: Moses, [the very one] in whom you have placed your hope [for salvation]. 46For if you believed and relied on [the Scriptures written by] Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me [personally]. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Commentaries on John 5:45
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 45Do not think that I will accuse you - You have accused me with a breach of the Sabbath, which accusation I have demonstrated to be false: I could, in return, accuse you, and substantiate the accusation, with the breach of the whole law; but this I need not do, for Moses, in whom ye trust, accuses you. You read his law, acknowledge you should obey it, and yet break it both in the letter and in the spirit. This law, therefore, accuses and condemns you. It…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45Do not think that I will accuse you - Do not suppose that I intend to follow your example. They had accused Jesus of breaking the law of God, John 5:16. He says that he will not imitate their example, though he implies that he might accuse them. To the Father - To God. There is one that accuseth you - Moses might be said to accuse or reprove them. He wrote of the Messiah, clearly foretold his coming, and commanded them to hear him. As they did not do it…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-47Verses 45-47 Many trust in some form of doctrines or some parties, who no more enter into the real meaning of those doctrines, or the views of the persons whose names they bear, than the Jews did into those of Moses. Let us search and pray over the Scriptures, as intent on finding eternal life; let us observe how Christ is the great subject of them, and daily apply to him for the life he bestows.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 45-46The fifth and final witness for Jesus was Moses, the central figure through whom God gave the law to Israel. Earlier in the Gospel of John, Jesus is compared with Moses, who gave the law, while Jesus brought grace and truth (1:17; see also 6:14–15). The Jewish leaders failed to accept the words of Moses, who spoke clearly about the coming Messiah, including the promise of a prophet like himself (for example, Deuteronomy 18:15).Read the comment
