Context of John 8:5
3Now the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. They made her stand in the center of the court, 4and they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women [to death]. So what do You say [to do with her—what is Your sentence]?” 6They said this to test Him, hoping that they would have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and began writing on the ground with His finger. 7However, when they persisted in questioning Him, He straightened up and said, “He who is without [any] sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Commentaries on John 8:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5That such should be stoned - It is not strictly true that Moses ordered adultery in general to be punished by stoning. The law simply says that the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death. Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22. The rabbins say they were strangled. This they affirm was the ordinary mode of punishment, where the species of death was not marked in the law, If the person guilty of an act of this kind had been betrothed, but not…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Moses in the law - The punishment of adultery commanded by Moses was death, Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22. The particular manner of the death was not specified in the law. The Jews had themselves, in the time of Christ, determined that it should be by stoning. See this described in the notes at Matthew 21:35, Matthew 21:44. The punishment for adultery varied. In some cases it was strangling. In the time of Ezekiel Ezekiel 16:38-40 it was stoning…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone: This suggests the woman was engaged or married (Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:23–24). The law also indicates that the man who sinned with her must die as well. But these Jewish religious leaders ignored that part of the law. They could have dealt with the situation privately to avoid shaming her. But their real intention was to condemn Jesus instead. They asked him, So what do you say? Would he neglect the law…Read the comment
