Context of John 18:11
9This was to fulfill and verify the words He had spoken, “Of those whom You have given Me, I have not lost even one.” 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword [back] in its sheath! Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” 12So the cohort and their commander and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him, 13and led Him to Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-11Simon Peter drew his sword: This was a short sword or long knife, usually worn with everyday clothes. The Hebrew name Malchus means "king." John may have included this detail as a subtle wordplay pointing to the true identity of Jesus (see 18:36–37; 19:19). Put your sword back: The mission of Jesus was not to fight for his life, but to die for ours.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1110-11. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. John being "known to the high priest" (Joh 18:15), the mention of the servant's name by him is quite natural, and an interesting mark of truth in a small matter. As to the right ear, specified both here and in Luke (Lu…Read the comment
