Context of John 18:11
9This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.” 10Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. “Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?” 12Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-11Simon Peter drew his sword: This was a short sword or long knife, usually worn with everyday clothes. The Hebrew name Malchus means "king." John may have included this detail as a subtle wordplay pointing to the true identity of Jesus (see 18:36–37; 19:19). Put your sword back: The mission of Jesus was not to fight for his life, but to die for ours.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1110-11. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus--None of the other Evangelists mention the name either of the ardent disciple or of his victim. John being "known to the high priest" (Joh 18:15), the mention of the servant's name by him is quite natural, and an interesting mark of truth in a small matter. As to the right ear, specified both here and in Luke (Lu…Read the comment
