Context of Hebrews 8:2
1Now the main point of what we have to say is this: we have such a High Priest, [the Christ] who is seated [in the place of honor] at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty (God) in heaven, a Minister (Officiating Priest) in the holy places and in the true tabernacle, which is erected not by man, but by the Lord. 3For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; so it is essential for this One also to have something to offer. 4Now if He were [still living] on earth, He would not be a priest at all, for there are priests who offer the gifts [to God] in accordance with the Law.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2A minister of the sanctuary - ̔ · A public minister of the holy things or places. The word , from , public, and , a work or office, means a person who officiated for the public, a public officer; in whom, and his work, all the people had a common right: hence our word liturgy, the public work of prayer and praise, designed for the people at large; all having a right to attend it, and each having an equal interest in it. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-2The first two verses of chapter 8 connect the previous discussion and introduce the next topic. The main point is that Jesus is appointed as a superior high priest (Hebrews 5:1–10; 7:1–28). He serves in the heavenly tabernacle (also in 8:5): This introduces the theme of Jesus’s superior offering, discussed in the rest of this section (8:3–10:18). Unlike the Levitical priests who served in an earthly tent or building, the sacrifice of Jesus is superior…Read the comment
