Context of Ephesians 6:16
14So stand firm and hold your ground, having tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart), 15and having strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. Above all, lift up the [protective] shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. 18With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all God’s people.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 16Above all, ( , over all the rest of the armor), taking the shield of faith - In the word , thureos, the apostle alludes to the great oblong shield, or scutum, which covers the whole body. See its description before. And as faith is the grace by which all others are preserved and rendered active, so it is properly represented here under the notion of a shield, by which the whole body is covered and protected. Faith, in this place, must mean that evidence…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16Above all - ̓ ͂ . Not “above all” in point of importance or value, but “over” all, as a soldier holds his shield to defend himself. It constitutes a protection over every part of his body, as it can be turned in every direction. The idea is, that as the shield covered or protected the other parts of the armor, so faith had a similar importance in the Christian virtues. The shield - note, Isaiah 21:9. The shield was usually made of light wood. or a rim of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-18Verses 10-18 Spiritual strength and courage are needed for our spiritual warfare and suffering. Those who would prove themselves to have true grace, must aim at all grace; and put on the whole armour of God, which he prepares and bestows. The Christian armour is made to be worn; and there is no putting off our armour till we have done our warfare, and finished our course. The combat is not against human enemies, nor against our own corrupt nature only; we…Read the comment

Like a shield that protects a soldier from arrows, faith protects believers from fear, doubt, and the lies of the devil. all the flaming arrows: Paul uses a strong picture to describe how temptation to sin can come suddenly and powerfully (compare Matthew 6:13; 26:41; 1 Corinthians 10:13; James 1:12–15). In battle, arrows were sometimes dipped…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1616. Above all--rather, "Over all"; so as to cover all that has been put on before. Three integuments are specified, the breastplate, girdle, and shoes; two defenses, the helmet and shield; and two offensive weapons, the sword and the spear (prayer). Alford translates, "Besides all," as the Greek is translated, Lu 3:20. But if it meant this, it would have come last in the list (compare Col 3:14). shield--the large oblong oval door-like shield of the…Read the comment
