Context of Matthew 9:10
8When the crowd saw it, they were afraid and glorified God, who had given such authority to men. 9As Yeshua was passing by from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. He said to him, “Follow Me.” And he got up and followed Him. Now it happened that when Yeshua was reclining at the table in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Yeshua and His disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why does this Teacher of yours eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12But when He heard this, Yeshua said, “Those who are healthy have no need for a doctor, but those who are sick do.

Commentaries on Matthew 9:10
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10Sat at meat in the house - Viz. of Matthew, who it appears, from Luke 5:29, made a great feast on the occasion, thus testifying his gratitude for the honor done him; and that his friends and acquaintances might profit by the teaching of his new master, he invites them to the entertainment that was honored by the presence of Christ. His companions, it appears, were not of the most creditable kind. They were tax-gatherers (see Matthew 5:46;) and sinners…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house - This was at a feast given to him by “Levi” or “Matthew,” Luke 5:29. This is another circumstance favorable to Matthew, but omitted by him, and recorded by Luke; showing also that the apostles were averse to praising themselves. To receive Christ hospitably and kindly was a commendable act, and it strongly evinces Matthew‘s freedom from ostentation that he has not himself mentioned the fact. It thus…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-13Verses 10-13 Some time after his call, Matthew sought to bring his old associates to hear Christ. He knew by experience what the grace of Christ could do, and would not despair concerning them. Those who are effectually brought to Christ, cannot but desire that others also may be brought to him. Those who suppose their souls to be without disease will not welcome the spiritual Physician. This was the case with the Pharisees; they despised Christ, because…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10The Jewish people hated Jewish tax collectors (Matthew 5:46–47; 18:15–20). This was because they worked with Roman rulers. Jews considered them traitors against Israel. Many also considered them ceremonially unclean because of their contact with Gentiles and the images on Roman coins. Tax collection was a private business. In each area, Rome gave the right to collect taxes to the highest bidder (compare Luke 19:1–10). Collectors kept any money they…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house--The modesty of our Evangelist signally appears here. Luke says (Lu 5:29) that "Levi made Him a great feast," or "reception," while Matthew merely says, "He sat at meat"; and Mark and Luke say that it was in Levi's "own house," while Matthew merely says, "He sat at meat in the house." Whether this feast was made now, or not till afterwards, is a point of some importance in the order of events, and…Read the comment
