Context of Matthew 27:11
9Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty silver pieces, the price of Him on whom a price had been set by Bnei-Yisrael; 10and they gave them for the potter’s field, just as Adonai arranged for me.” Now Yeshua stood before the governor. The governor questioned Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You say so,” Yeshua said. 12And while He was accused by the ruling kohanim and elders, He did not answer. 13Then Pilate said to Him, “Don’t You hear how many things they testify against you?”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Before the governor - My old MS. English Bible translates Meyr cheef justyse, Presedent. Art thou the King of the Jews? - The Jews had undoubtedly delivered him to Pilate as one who was rising up against the imperial authority, and assuming the regal office. See on Matthew 27:2; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And Jesus stood before the governor - Many things are omitted by Matthew, in the account of this trial, which are recorded by the other evangelists. A much more full account is found in John 18:28-40. And the governor asked him - This question was asked On account of the “charge” which the Jews brought against Jesus, “of perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar,” Luke 23:2. It was on this charge that, after consultation, they had…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-25Verses 11-25 Having no malice against Jesus, Pilate urged him to clear himself, and laboured to get him discharged. The message from his wife was a warning. God has many ways of giving checks to sinners, in their sinful pursuits, and it is a great mercy to have such checks from Providence, from faithful friends, and from our own consciences. O do not this abominable thing which the Lord hates! is what we may hear said to us, when we are entering into…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11King of the Jews: The Sanhedrin's first charge of blasphemy in Matthew 26:65–66; 27:1 did not cause concern for the Romans. The Romabs considered it to be a Jewish religious issue (see Acts 25:18–20). So, the Sanhedrin changed the charge to make Jesus seem like a political rebel to the Romans (see Luke 23:2).Read the comment
