Context of Matthew 27:11
9Then the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet were fulfilled: “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him on whom a price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10and they gave them for the Potter’s Field, as the Lord directed me.” Now Jesus stood before [Pilate] the governor, and the governor asked Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” [In affirmation] Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” 12But when the charges were brought against Him by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. 13Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Before the governor - My old MS. English Bible translates Meyr cheef justyse, Presedent. Art thou the King of the Jews? - The Jews had undoubtedly delivered him to Pilate as one who was rising up against the imperial authority, and assuming the regal office. See on Matthew 27:2; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11And Jesus stood before the governor - Many things are omitted by Matthew, in the account of this trial, which are recorded by the other evangelists. And the governor asked him - This question was asked On account of the “charge” which the Jews brought against Jesus, “of perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar,” Luke 23:2. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-25Verses 11-25 Having no malice against Jesus, Pilate urged him to clear himself, and laboured to get him discharged. The message from his wife was a warning. God has many ways of giving checks to sinners, in their sinful pursuits, and it is a great mercy to have such checks from Providence, from faithful friends, and from our own consciences. O do not this abominable thing which the Lord hates! is what we may hear said to us, when we are entering into…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11King of the Jews: The Sanhedrin's first charge of blasphemy in Matthew 26:65–66; 27:1 did not cause concern for the Romans. The Romabs considered it to be a Jewish religious issue (see Acts 25:18–20). So, the Sanhedrin changed the charge to make Jesus seem like a political rebel to the Romans (see Luke 23:2).Read the comment
