Context of Mark 10:39

37They said to Him, “Let us sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38But Yeshua answered them, “You don’t know what you’re asking! Are you able to drink the cup I drink, or endure the immersion I must endure?” They said to Him, “We are able.” And Yeshua said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink, and you will endure the immersion I must endure. 40But to sit on My right or left is not Mine to grant—it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41Now when the ten heard, they started to get angry with Jacob and John.

• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35-45Verses 35-45 See the notes at Matthew 20:20-28. Mark 10:35 And James and John … came unto him - They did this through the instrumentality of their mother. They did not come in “person,” but they got their mother to make the request for them. Compare the notes at Matthew 20:20.Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-45Verses 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39James and John truly experienced suffering for Jesus. James died for his faith (Acts 12:1–5). John died an old man, having experienced persecution (Tertullian, The Soul 50; Jerome, Commentary on Galatians 6, 10). Yet the death of James and John was not the same the death of Jesus. No believer can die the death of Jesus as a sacrifice for the world's sins (Mark 10:45) or experience the unique suffering he experienced on the cross (15:34).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3939. And they said unto him, We can--Here we see them owning their mother's petition for them as their own; and doubtless they were perfectly sincere in professing their willingness to follow their Master to any suffering He might have to endure. As for James, he was the first of the apostles who was honored, and showed himself able to be baptized with his Master's baptism of blood (Ac 12:1, 2); while John, after going through all the persecutions to which…Read the comment
