Context of Mark 10:39
37They said to him, ‘When you are king, we want to rule with you. One of us will sit at your right side and the other one at your left side.’ 38Jesus said to them, ‘You do not understand what you are asking for. I will have much pain and trouble. Are you ready to have the same pain? Are you ready to die in the way that I will die?’ James and John replied, ‘Yes, we can do all that.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Yes, that is true. You will have pain like mine. And people will want to kill you like me. 40But I cannot promise that you will sit at my right side or at my left side. God has chosen the people who will sit there. He has prepared the places for those people.’ 41When the other ten disciples heard about this, they were angry with James and John.

- John 13:37Peter said, ‘Lord, why can I not go with you now? I would even die for you.’
- Mark 14:36He said, ‘Abba, my Father, you can do all things. Please take this great pain away from me. But I do not ask you to do what I want. Do what you want to do.’
- Matthew 10:25A student should be happy if he becomes like his teacher. A servant should be happy if he becomes like his master. People have called me, the master of the house, Beelzebul. You are like those people who live in my house. So do not be surprised when people call you even worse names than they call me.
- John 15:20Remember what I told you: “No servant is more important than his master is.” If they have caused trouble for me, they will also cause trouble for you. But if they have obeyed my message, they will also obey your message.
- John 17:14I have given your message to them. The world's people have hated them because they do not belong to the world. They do not belong to the world, in the same way that I do not belong to the world.
- Acts 12:2He sent his soldiers to cut off James's head. James was John's brother.
- Colossians 1:24At this time, I am suffering on your behalf, but I am still happy. Christ himself suffered on behalf of his people, the church. Now, while I live in my human body, I also suffer. I continue to receive the pain that Christ received, so that it may be complete. In that way, I help the church, which is like Christ's own body.
- Revelation 1:9I am John. I am a believer, as you are. I am like your brother and your friend. Because we belong to Jesus' kingdom, we are having trouble and pain. So we all need to be strong and patient, as Jesus helps us. The Roman leaders punished me because I taught God's message. I told people the true message about Jesus. That is why they sent me to Patmos island.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35-45Verses 35-45 See the notes at Matthew 20:20-28. Mark 10:35 And James and John came unto him - They did this through the instrumentality of their mother. They did not come in “person,” but they got their mother to make the request for them. Compare the notes at Matthew 20:20.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-45Verses 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39James and John truly experienced suffering for Jesus. James died for his faith (Acts 12:1–5). John died an old man, having experienced persecution (Tertullian, The Soul 50; Jerome, Commentary on Galatians 6, 10). Yet the death of James and John was not the same the death of Jesus. No believer can die the death of Jesus as a sacrifice for the world's sins (Mark 10:45) or experience the unique suffering he experienced on the cross (15:34).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3939. And they said unto him, We can--Here we see them owning their mother's petition for them as their own; and doubtless they were perfectly sincere in professing their willingness to follow their Master to any suffering He might have to endure. As for James, he was the first of the apostles who was honored, and showed himself able to be baptized with his Master's baptism of blood (Ac 12:1, 2); while John, after going through all the persecutions to which…Read the comment
