Context of Luke 7:30
28I say to you, there is no one greater than John among those born of women; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” 29And when all the people heard, even the tax collectors, they affirmed God’s justice, because they had been immersed with John’s immersion. But the Pharisees and Torah lawyers, not having been immersed by John, declared God’s purpose invalid for themselves. 31“So then, to what shall I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to each other, saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you didn’t dance. We sang a dirge, and you didn’t weep.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 30Rejected the counsel of God - Or, frustrated the will of God - . Kypke says the verb has two meanings: - 1, to disbelieve; 2, despise, or disobey: and that both senses may be properly conjoined here. The will of God was that all the inhabitants of Judea should repent at the preaching of John, be baptized, and believe in Christ Jesus. Now as they did not repent, etc., at John's preaching, so they did not believe his testimony concerning Christ: thus the…Read the comment

Justified God - Considered God as “just” or “right” in the counsel which he gave by John - to wit, in calling people to repentance, and in denouncing future wrath on the impenitent. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 19-35Verses 19-35 To his miracles in the kingdom of nature, Christ adds this in the kingdom of grace, To the poor the gospel is preached. It clearly pointed out the spiritual nature of Christ's kingdom, that the messenger he sent before him to prepare his way, did it by preaching repentance and reformation of heart and life. We have here the just blame of those who were not wrought upon by the ministry of John Baptist or of Jesus Christ himself. They made a…Read the comment

The meaning is, They acknowledged the divine wisdom of such a preparatory ministry as John's, in leading them to Him who now spake to them (see Lu 1:16, 17); whereas the Pharisees and lawyers, true to themselves in refusing the…Read the comment
