Context of John 21:6
4At dawn, Yeshua stood on the beach; but the disciples didn’t know that it was Yeshua. 5So Yeshua said to them, “Boys, you don’t happen to have any fish, do you?” “No,” they answered Him. He said to them, “Throw the net off the right side of the boat, and you’ll find some.” So they threw the net, and they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7Therefore the disciple whom Yeshua loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tied his outer garment around himself—for he was stripped down for work—and threw himself into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the boat from about two hundred cubits offshore, dragging the net full of fish.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6And ye shall find - The Ethiopic, three copies of the Itala, and St. Cyril, add, They said therefore unto him, we have labored all the night and caught nothing, nevertheless at thy command we will let down the net. This is borrowed from Luke 5:5. For the multitude of fishes - This was intended as an emblem of the immense number of souls which should be converted to God by their ministry; according to the promise of Christ, Matthew 4:19.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6On the right side - Why the right side is mentioned is not known. Grotius supposes that it was the side nearest the shore, where there was less probability of taking fish. It does not appear that they yet recognized the Lord Jesus, but from some cause they had sufficient confidence in him to make another trial. Perhaps they judged that he was one skilled in that employment, and knew where there was the greatest probability of success.Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3-63-6. Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing--(See on Lu 5:11). that night ... caught nothing--as at the first miraculous draught (see on Lu 5:5); no doubt so ordered that the miracle might strike them the more by contrast. The same principle is seen in operation throughout much of Christ's ministry, and is indeed a great law of God's spiritual procedure with His people.Read the comment
