Context of John 2:9
7Yeshua said to them, “Fill the jars with water!” So they filled them up to the top. 8Then He said to them, “Take some water out, and give it to the headwaiter.” And they brought it. Now the headwaiter did not know where it had come from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. As the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, he calls the bridegroom 10and says to him, “Everyone brings out the good wine first, and whenever they are drunk, then the worse. But you’ve reserved the good wine until now!” 11Yeshua did this, the first of the signs, in Cana of the Galilee—He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9And knew not whence it was - This is said, probably, to indicate that his judgment was not biased by any favor, or any lack of favor, toward Jesus. Had he known what was done, he would have been less likely to have judged impartially. As it is, we have his testimony that this was real wine, and of so fine a body and flavor as to surpass that which had been provided for the occasion. Everything in this miracle shows that there was no collusion or…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 9-10The master of the banquet repeated a common saying. Normally, the best wine was served first, when people could taste it most clearly. Later, wine of lower quality was served. But this time it was different. The wine Jesus made, served last, was the best of all. In the Old Testament, good wine was a sign of God’s blessing(Amos 9:13–14). This miracle showed that the Messiah, God’s greatest blessing, had now come.Read the comment
