Context of 2 John 1:7
5Now I ask you, dear lady, that we love one another. It is not as though I am writing you a new command, but the one we have had from the beginning. 6Now this is love: that we walk according to His commands. This is the commandment—just as you heard from the beginning—that you walk in love. For many deceivers have gone out into the world—those who do not acknowledge Yeshua as Messiah coming in human flesh. This one is a deceiver and the anti-messiah. 8Watch yourselves, so you do not lose what we have worked for but receive a full reward. 9Anyone who goes too far and does not remain in Messiah’s teaching does not have God. Anyone who remains in this teaching has both the Father and the Son.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-11Verses 7-11 The deceiver and his deceit are described: he brings some error concerning the person or office of the Lord Jesus. Such a one is a deceiver and an antichrist; he deludes souls, and undermines the glory and kingdom of the Lord Christ. Let us not think it strange, that there are deceivers and opposers of the Lord Christ's name and dignity now, for there were such, even in the apostles' times. The more deceivers and deceits abound, the more…Read the comment

John argued strongly against this false teaching in his first letter (see 1 John 4:2–3). A false teacher is a deceiver because they mislead believers who are not careful. Such a person is also an antichrist because they turn people away from the true Christ. By using this strong apocalyptic title, antichrist, John shows…Read the comment
