Context of 1 Corinthians 11:30

28But a man must examine himself, and then let him eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29For the one who eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself. For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and quite a few have died. 31For if we were judging ourselves thoroughly, we wouldn’t be coming under judgment. 32But when we are judged, we are being disciplined by the Lord so that we might not be condemned along with the world.

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 11:30

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 30For this cause - That they partook of this sacred ordinance without discerning the Lord's body; many are weak and sickly: it is hard to say whether these words refer to the consequences of their own intemperance or to some extraordinary disorders inflicted immediately by God himself. That there were disorders of the most reprehensible kind among these people at this sacred supper, the preceding verses sufficiently point out; and after such excesses, many…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 30For this cause - On account of the improper manner of celebrating the Lord‘s Supper; see 1 Corinthians 11:21. Many are weak - ( ̓͂ astheneis). Evidently referring to prevailing bodily sickness and disease. This is the natural and obvious interpretation of this passage. The sense clearly is, that God had sent among them bodily distempers as an expression of the divine displeasure and judgment for their improper mode of celebrating the Lord‘s Supper. That…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-34Verses 23-34 The apostle describes the sacred ordinance, of which he had the knowledge by revelation from Christ. As to the visible signs, these are the bread and wine. What is eaten is called bread, though at the same time it is said to be the body of the Lord, plainly showing that the apostle did not mean that the bread was changed into flesh. St. Matthew tells us, our Lord bid them all drink of the cup, ch. Mt 26:27, as if he would, by this expression…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-30In light of 11:27, the body of Christ likely refers to the death of Christ, not the church, though some interpret it that way. Those who eat the bread or drink the cup in an unworthy manner bring God's judgment upon themselves. This judgment may result in infirmities, sickness, or even death (see Acts 5:5, 10).Read the comment
