Context of Mark 5:40
38And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39And when he had come in, he saith to them, Why make ye this tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed at him. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the child, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the child was lying. 41And he took the child by the hand, and said to her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Little girl, I say to thee, arise. 42And immediately the child arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

Commentaries on Mark 5:40
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40The father and the mother - Prudence required that they should be present, and be witnesses of the miracle. And them that were with him - That is, Peter, James, and John, Mark 5:37. It is remarkable that our Lord gave a particular preference to these three disciples, beyond all the rest, on three very important occasions: They were present at the transfiguration. At the raising of Jairus's daughter. At his agony in the garden of Gethsemane. Where the…Read the comment

Mark 5:23 Lieth at the point of death - Is dying; in the last agonies. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-43Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4040. And they laughed him to scorn--rather, simply, "laughed at Him"--"knowing that she was dead" (Lu 8:53); an important testimony this to the reality of her death. But when he had put them all out--The word is strong--"turned them all out"; meaning all those who were making this noise, and any others that may have been there from sympathy, that only those might be present who were most nearly concerned, and those whom He had Himself brought as witnesses…Read the comment
