Context of Mark 5:40
38And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and many weeping and wailing greatly. 39And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was. 41And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise. 42And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40The father and the mother - Prudence required that they should be present, and be witnesses of the miracle. And them that were with him - That is, Peter, James, and John, Mark 5:37. It is remarkable that our Lord gave a particular preference to these three disciples, beyond all the rest, on three very important occasions: They were present at the transfiguration. At the raising of Jairus's daughter. At his agony in the garden of Gethsemane. Where the…Read the comment

Mark 5:23 Lieth at the point of death - Is dying; in the last agonies. Mark 5:26 Had suffered many things - Had resorted to many things painful, by the direction of the physicians, in order to be healed. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-43Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4040. And they laughed him to scorn--rather, simply, "laughed at Him"--"knowing that she was dead" (Lu 8:53); an important testimony this to the reality of her death. But when he had put them all out--The word is strong--"turned them all out"; meaning all those who were making this noise, and any others that may have been there from sympathy, that only those might be present who were most nearly concerned, and those whom He had Himself brought as witnesses…Read the comment
