Context of Mark 5:40
38And he comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and people weeping and wailing greatly. 39And entering in he says to them, Why do ye make a tumult and weep? the child has not died, but sleeps. And they derided him. But he, having put [them] all out, takes with [him] the father of the child, and the mother, and those that were with him, and enters in where the child was lying. 41And having laid hold of the hand of the child, he says to her, Talitha koumi, which is, interpreted, Damsel, I say to thee, Arise. 42And immediately the damsel arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished with great astonishment.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 40The father and the mother - Prudence required that they should be present, and be witnesses of the miracle. And them that were with him - That is, Peter, James, and John, Mark 5:37. It is remarkable that our Lord gave a particular preference to these three disciples, beyond all the rest, on three very important occasions: They were present at the transfiguration. At the raising of Jairus's daughter. At his agony in the garden of Gethsemane. Where the…Read the comment

Mark 5:23 Lieth at the point of death - Is dying; in the last agonies. Mark 5:26 Had suffered many things - Had resorted to many things painful, by the direction of the physicians, in order to be healed. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-43Verses 35-43 We may suppose Jairus hesitating whether he should ask Christ to go on or not, when told that his daughter was dead. But have we not as much occasion for the grace of God, and the comfort of his Spirit, for the prayers of our ministers and Christian friends, when death is in the house, as when sickness is there? Faith is the only remedy against grief and fear at such a time. Believe the resurrection, then fear not. He raised the dead child to…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4040. And they laughed him to scorn--rather, simply, "laughed at Him"--"knowing that she was dead" (Lu 8:53); an important testimony this to the reality of her death. But when he had put them all out--The word is strong--"turned them all out"; meaning all those who were making this noise, and any others that may have been there from sympathy, that only those might be present who were most nearly concerned, and those whom He had Himself brought as witnesses…Read the comment
