Daniel 1:3-16

And the kingH4428 spake unto AshpenazH828 the masterH559 of his eunuchsH5631, that he should bringH935 in certain of the childrenH1121 of IsraelH3478, even of the seedH2233 royalH4428 and of the noblesH6579;

youthsH3206 in whomH834 was noH369 blemishH3971, but wellH2896 favoured, and skilful in allH3605 wisdomH2451, and cunning in knowledgeH1847, and understandingH995 science, and suchH834 as had abilityH3581 to standH5975 in the king’sH4428 palaceH1964; and that he should teachH3925 them the learning and the tongueH3956 of the ChaldeansH3778.

And the kingH4428 appointedH5975 for them a dailyH3117 portionH1697 of the king’sH4428 meat, and of the wineH3196 whichH4960 he drankH4960, and that they should be nourished threeH7969 yearsH8141; that at the endH7117 thereof they might standH5975 beforeH6440 the kingH4428.

NowH1961 among these were, of the childrenH1121 of JudahH3063, DanielH1840, HananiahH2608, MishaelH4332, and AzariahH5838.

And the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 gaveH7760 namesH8034 unto them: unto DanielH1840 he gaveH7760 the nameH8034 of BelteshazzarH1095; and to HananiahH2608, of ShadrachH7714; and to MishaelH4332, of MeshachH4335; and to AzariahH5838, of Abed-negoH5664.

But DanielH1840 purposed in his heartH3820 that he would notH3808 defileH1351 himselfH3820 with the king’sH4428 meat, norH3808 with the wineH3196 whichH834 he drankH4960: therefore he requested of the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 that he might notH3808 defileH1351 himselfH3820.

NowH5414 GodH430 madeH5414 DanielH1840 to findH5414 favour and compassionH7356 in the sightH6440 of the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631.

And the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 saidH559 unto Darnel, I fearH3373 my lordH113 the kingH4428, who hath appointedH4487 your meat and your drinkH4960: for whyH4100 should he seeH7200 your facesH6440 worse liking thanH4480 the youthsH3206 whichH834 are of your ownH6440 age? soH4480 should ye endanger my headH7218 with the kingH4428.

Then saidH559 DanielH1840 to the steward, whomH834 the princeH8269 of the eunuchsH5631 had appointedH4487 over DanielH1840, HananiahH2608, MishaelH4332, and AzariahH5838:

Prove thy servantsH5650, I beseechH4994 thee, tenH6235 daysH3117; and letH4994 them giveH5414 usH5414 pulse to eatH398, and waterH4325 to drinkH8354.

Then let our countenances be lookedH7200 uponH7200 beforeH6440 thee, and the countenanceH6440 of the youthsH3206 that eatH398 of the king’sH4428 meat; and as thou seest, dealH6213 with thy servantsH5650.

SoH2088 he hearkened unto them in this matterH1697, and provedH5254 them tenH6235 daysH3117.

And at the endH7117 of tenH6235 daysH3117 their countenances appearedH7200 fairer, and they were fatter in fleshH1320, thanH4480 allH3605 the youthsH3206 which didH3117 eatH398 of the king’sH4428 meatH1320.

SoH1961 the steward tookH5375 awayH5375 their meat, and the wineH3196 that they should drinkH4960, and gaveH5414 them pulse.
