Context of Matthew 25:46

44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Commentaries on Matthew 25:46

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment - No appeal, no remedy, to all eternity! No end to the punishment of those whose final impenitence manifests in them an eternal will and desire to sin. By dying in a settled opposition to God, they cast themselves into a necessity of continuing in an eternal aversion from him. But some are of opinion that this punishment shall have an end: this is as likely as that the glory of the righteous shall have…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 46And these shall go away - These “persons.” Many, holding the doctrine of universal salvation have contended that God would punish sin only. Christ says that “those on his left hand,” shall go away - not “sins,” but “sinners.” Besides, sin, as an abstract thing, cannot be punished. Sin is nothing but an “act” - the act of a transgressor, and, to be reached at all, it must be reached by punishing the offender himself. Into everlasting punishment - The…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-46Verses 31-46 This is a description of the last judgment. It is as an explanation of the former parables. There is a judgment to come, in which every man shall be sentenced to a state of everlasting happiness, or misery. Christ shall come, not only in the glory of his Father, but in his own glory, as Mediator. The wicked and godly here dwell together, in the same cities, churches, families, and are not always to be known the one from the other; such are…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 46The Greek word for eternal can mean "lasting forever" or "lasting for an age." It refers to "the age to come" (Matthew 13:39–40, 49; 24:3; John 17:3; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Philemon 1:15; 1 John 5:11, 13). Some hope that the punishment of the damned will end after "an age." God will either destroy or forgive them. Yet, the comparison between eternal life and eternal punishment strongly suggests it means "lasting forever." This is because eternal life does…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4646. And these shall go away--these "cursed" ones. Sentence, it should seem, was first pronounced--in the hearing of the wicked--upon the righteous, who thereupon sit as assessors in the judgment upon the wicked (1Co 6:2); but sentence is first executed, it should seem, upon the wicked, in the sight of the righteous--whose glory will thus not be beheld by the wicked, while their descent into "their own place" will be witnessed by the righteous, as Bengel…Read the comment
