• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11A Savior, which is Christ the Lord - A Savior, , the same as Jesus from , to make safe, to deliver, preserve, to make alive, thus used by the Septuagint for החיה hecheiah, to cause to escape; used by the same for פלט to confide in, to hope. See the extensive acceptations of the verb in Mintert, who adds under : "The word properly denotes such a Savior as perfectly frees us from all evil and danger, and is the author of perpetual salvation." • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-20Verses 8-20 Angels were heralds of the new-born Saviour, but they were only sent to some poor, humble, pious, industrious shepherds, who were in the business of their calling, keeping watch over their flock. We are not out of the way of Divine visits, when we are employed in an honest calling, and abide with God in it. Let God have the honour of this work; Glory to God in the highest. God's good-will to men, manifested in sending the Messiah, redounds to…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 11The word "Messiah" means "Anointed One." It comes from the Hebrew word mashiakh and is translated into Greek as Christos. The Messiah refers to the promised savior who would come from King David's family line (see study note on 1:32–33). As the apostles started preaching the good news about Jesus to the non-Jewish world, Christians started using Christos more as a name than a title.Read the comment

It is a birth--"The Word is made flesh" (Joh 1:14). When? "This day." Where? "In the city of David"--in the right line and at the right "spot"; where prophecy bade us look for Him, and faith accordingly expected Him. How dear to us should be these historic moorings of our faith! With the loss of them, all substantial Christianity is lost. By means of…Read the comment
