Context of Leviticus 18:5
3After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. 4Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am Yhwh your God. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am Yhwh. 6None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am Yhwh. 7The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5If a man keeps the “statutes” (i. e. the ordinances of Leviticus 18:4) and “judgments” of the divine law, he shall not be “cut off from his people” (compare Leviticus 18:29), he shall gain true life, the life which connects him with Yahweh through his obedience. See the margin reference and Luke 10:28; Romans 10:5; Galatians 3:12.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4-5judgments … statutes: The Bible anticipated that courts would interpret God's laws for different situations. These interpretations became case laws, known as mishpatim in Hebrew (see “statutes” in Leviticus 10:11). Paul refers to these verses in Romans 10:5 and Galatians 3:12, where he contrasts living "based on faith” or “by the law.”Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. Obedience to the divine law always, indeed…Read the comment
