Context of John 6:47

45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. 46Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48I am that bread of life. 49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

Commentaries on John 6:47

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 47Hath everlasting life - He is entitled to this, on his believing me to be the Messiah, and trusting in me alone for salvation. Our blessed Lord recapitulates here what he had said in the preceding discourse. The person who is saved is, drawn by the Father; hears his instructions; accepts the salvation offered; is given to Christ Jesus, that he may be justified by faith; is nourished by the bread of life; perseveres in the faith; is not lost, but is raised…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-51Verses 47-51 The advantage of the manna was small, it only referred to this life; but the living Bread is so excellent, that the man who feedeth on it shall never die. This bread is Christ's human nature, which he took to present to the Father, as a sacrifice for the sins of the world; to purchase all things pertaining to life and godliness, for sinners of every nation, who repent and believe in him.Read the comment
