Context of John 6:47

45It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every one that has heard from the Father [himself], and has learned [of him], comes to me; 46not that any one has seen the Father, except he who is of God, he has seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say to you, He that believes [on me] has life eternal. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.

Commentaries on John 6:47

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 47Hath everlasting life - He is entitled to this, on his believing me to be the Messiah, and trusting in me alone for salvation. Our blessed Lord recapitulates here what he had said in the preceding discourse. The person who is saved is, drawn by the Father; hears his instructions; accepts the salvation offered; is given to Christ Jesus, that he may be justified by faith; is nourished by the bread of life; perseveres in the faith; is not lost, but is raised…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-51Verses 47-51 The advantage of the manna was small, it only referred to this life; but the living Bread is so excellent, that the man who feedeth on it shall never die. This bread is Christ's human nature, which he took to present to the Father, as a sacrifice for the sins of the world; to purchase all things pertaining to life and godliness, for sinners of every nation, who repent and believe in him.Read the comment
