Context of Matthew 24:29
27For as the lightning flashes in the east and shines to the west, so it will be when the Son of Man comes. 28Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near. “Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 30And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.

Commentaries on Matthew 24:29
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 29Immediately after the tribulation, etc. - Commentators generally understand this, and what follows, of the end of the world and Christ's coming to judgment: but the word immediately shows that our Lord is not speaking of any distant event, but of something immediately consequent on calamities already predicted: and that must be the destruction of Jerusalem. "The Jewish heaven shall perish, and the sun and moon of its glory and happiness shall be darkened…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 29Immediately after the tribulation of those days - That is, immediately after these tribulations, events will occur that “may be properly represented” by the darkening of the sun and moon, and by the stars falling from heaven. The word rendered “immediately” - ̓́ eutheōs- means, properly, “straightway, immediately,” Matthew 8:3; Matthew 13:5; Mark 1:31; Acts 12:10; then “shortly,” 3 John 1:14. This is the meaning here. Such events would “shortly” or…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-41Verses 29-41 Christ foretells his second coming. It is usual for prophets to speak of things as near and just at hand, to express the greatness and certainty of them. Concerning Christ's second coming, it is foretold that there shall be a great change, in order to the making all things new. Then they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds. At his first coming, he was set for a sign that should be spoken against, but at his second coming, a sign…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29‘The sun will be darkened … the heavens will be shaken.’: This could be literal, as is fitting for a dramatic revelation of God's Son. Or, it could be a metaphor for a major cosmic event (see Acts 2:17–21; Hebrews 12:26–27; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 6:12–13). The Old Testament often uses similar apocalyptic language to describe political disasters and the collapse of governments as cosmic judgments from God (for example, Isaiah 13:9–16; Ezekiel 32:1–10…Read the comment
