Context of Matthew 24:31
29“Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 30And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with the mighty blast of a trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from all over the world—from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven. 32“Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. 33In the same way, when you see all these things, you can know his return is very near, right at the door.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31And he shall send his angels - “Angels” signify, literally, “messengers,” Luke 7:24; Luke 9:52. The word is often applied to inanimate objects, or to anything that God employs to rescue his people from danger Psalm 104:4; but it most commonly refers to the race of intelligent beings more exalted than man, who are employed often in the work of man‘s rescue from ruin, and aiding his salvation, Hebrews 1:14. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31Some believe this passage predicts the rapture, when God’s people are gathered by angels (Matthew 13:41; 16:27; 25:31). Others think the word angeloi (Greek for “messengers”) here refers to human messengers (11:10; Luke 7:24; 9:52; James 2:25). In this view, Jesus is describing the spread of the good news among the Gentiles (see Matthew 21:33–46; 22:1–14; Deuteronomy 30:1–10; Isaiah 27:13; Zechariah 2:6–13).Read the comment
