Context of Mark 14:36
34He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 35He went on a little farther and fell to the ground. He prayed that, if it were possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by. “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” 37Then he returned and found the disciples asleep. He said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? 38Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

Commentaries on Mark 14:36
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36Abba, Father - This Syriac word, which intimates filial affection and respect, and parental tenderness, seems to have been used by our blessed Lord merely considered as man, to show his complete submission to his Father's will, and the tender affection which he was conscious his Father had for him, Abba, Syriac, is here joined to ̔ , Greek, both signifying father; so St. Paul, Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6. The reason is, that from the time in which the Jews…Read the comment

Mark 14:36 ̓ AbbaThis word denotes “father.” It is a Syriac word, and is used by the Saviour as a word denoting filial affection and tenderness. Compare Romans 8:15. Mark 14:40 Neither wist they - Neither “knew” they. They were so conscious of the impropriety of sleeping at that time, that they could not find any answer to give to the inquiry why they had done it. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-42Verses 32-42 Christ's sufferings began with the sorest of all, those in his soul. He began to be sorely amazed; words not used in St. Matthew, but very full of meaning. The terrors of God set themselves in array against him, and he allowed him to contemplate them. Never was sorrow like unto his at this time. Now he was made a curse for us; the curses of the law were laid upon him as our Surety. He now tasted death, in all the bitterness of it. This was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 35-36Jesus fell to the ground to pray because of his deep distress (see Genesis 17:1–3; Leviticus 9:24; Numbers 14:5; 16:4). Since it was normal to pray out loud, Jesus was probably overheard by the three disciples, who would not have fallen asleep immediately. Jesus addressed God as Abba, Father, indicating their close relationship (see Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6). Take this cup from me: In faith, Jesus expressed his own feelings and desires to the Father. It…Read the comment
