Context of Mark 11:33
31They talked it over among themselves. “If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John. 32But do we dare say it was merely human?” For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet. So they finally replied, “We don’t know.” And Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-33Verses 27-33 Our Saviour shows how near akin his doctrine and baptism were to those of John; they had the same design and tendency, to bring in the gospel kingdom. These elders did not deserve to be taught; for it was plain that they contended not for truth, but victory: nor did he need to tell them; for the works he did, told them plainly he had authority from God; since no man could do the miracles which he did, unless God were with him.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 33We do not know: The religious leaders of the nation admitted that they could not answer a simple question that the people had no difficulty in answering: John was sent from God. This response showed the Jewish leaders were not fit to lead on this issue. Their stubbornness, lack of desire to understand, and refusal to accept the truth made further discussion without purpose (3:5; 7:6; 4:12). God's judgment would come within that very generation (13:30)…Read the comment
