Context of Luke 2:8
6And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8There were - shepherds abiding in the field - There is no intimation here that these shepherds were exposed to the open air. They dwelt in the fields where they had their sheep penned up; but they undoubtedly had tents or booths under which they dwelt. Keeping watch - by night - Or, as in the margin, keeping the watches of the night, i.e. each one keeping a watch (which ordinarily consisted of three hours) in his turn. Jesus came to people like these, who were ordinary, poor, and humble. residing in the fields: This detail suggests a warmer time of year, perhaps from March to November, although some shepherds stayed outside all…Read the comment

From about passover time in April until autumn, the flocks pastured constantly in the open fields, the shepherds lodging there all that time.
