Context of Acts 17:5
3He explained the prophecies and proved that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead. He said, “This Jesus I’m telling you about is the Messiah.” 4Some of the Jews who listened were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with many God-fearing Greek men and quite a few prominent women. But some of the Jews were jealous, so they gathered some troublemakers from the marketplace to form a mob and start a riot. They attacked the home of Jason, searching for Paul and Silas so they could drag them out to the crowd. 6Not finding them there, they dragged out Jason and some of the other believers instead and took them before the city council. “Paul and Silas have caused trouble all over the world,” they shouted, “and now they are here disturbing our city, too. 7And Jason has welcomed them into his home. They are all guilty of treason against Caesar, for they profess allegiance to another king, named Jesus.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5The Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them - Instead of this sentence, the most correct MSS. and versions read simply, ̔ . But the Jews taking, etc., leaving out the words, , , which believed not, moved with envy: these words do not appear to be genuine; there is the strongest evidence against them, and they should be omitted. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Moved with envy - That they made so many converts, and met with such success. Certain lewd fellows of the baser sort - This is an unhappy translation. The word “lewd” is not in the original. The Greek is, “And having taken certain wicked people of those who were about the forum,” or market-place. The forum, or market-place, was the place where the idle assembled, and where those were gathered together that wished to be employed, Matthew 20:3. Many of…Read the comment
