41And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. 42So they all ate and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. 44Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men. 45Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 43Twelve baskets - These were either the baskets used by the disciples, see Matthew 14:20, or baskets belonging to some of the multitude, who might have brought some with them to carry provisions, or other things necessary for the sick, whom they brought to Christ to be healed.Read the comment

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-44Verses 30-44 Let not ministers do any thing or teach any thing, but what they are willing should be told to their Lord. Christ notices the frights of some, and the toils of others of his disciples, and provides rest for those that are tired, and refuge for those that are terrified. The people sought the spiritual food of Christ's word, and then he took care that they should not want bodily food. If Christ and his disciples put up with mean things, surely…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 42-44This miracle makes Elisha’s miracle of feeding 100 people with 20 loaves seem less impressive (2 Kings 4:42–44). We should ask ourselves, “Who is this?” (Mark 4:41). He is the Christ, the Son of God (1:1).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4343. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes--"Therefore (says Joh 6:13), they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten." The article here rendered "baskets" in all the four narratives was part of the luggage taken by Jews on a journey--to carry, it is said, both their provisions and hay to sleep on, that they might…Read the comment
