Context of Mark 6:43

41Taking the five loaves and two fish, He looked up to heaven and said a blessing [of praise and thanksgiving to the Father]. Then He broke the loaves and [repeatedly] gave them to the disciples to set before the people; and He divided up the two fish among them all. 42They all ate and were satisfied. And the disciples picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces [of the loaves], and of the fish. 44Those who ate the loaves were five thousand men [not counting the women and children]. 45Jesus immediately insisted that His disciples get into the boat and go ahead [of Him] to the other side to Bethsaida, while He was dismissing the crowd.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-44Verses 30-44 Let not ministers do any thing or teach any thing, but what they are willing should be told to their Lord. Christ notices the frights of some, and the toils of others of his disciples, and provides rest for those that are tired, and refuge for those that are terrified. The people sought the spiritual food of Christ's word, and then he took care that they should not want bodily food. If Christ and his disciples put up with mean things, surely…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 42-44This miracle makes Elisha’s miracle of feeding 100 people with 20 loaves seem less impressive (2 Kings 4:42–44). We should ask ourselves, “Who is this?” (Mark 4:41). He is the Christ, the Son of God (1:1).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4343. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes--"Therefore (says Joh 6:13), they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten." The article here rendered "baskets" in all the four narratives was part of the luggage taken by Jews on a journey--to carry, it is said, both their provisions and hay to sleep on, that they might…Read the comment
